| UPDATE March 27, 2009 David Haynes, gained notoriety for catching a 21- pound channel catfish with a Barbie Doll fishing outfit in August 2008, [setting the new North Carolina state record]. But Haynes has had to relinquish his state-record cat to an angler who caught a bigger channel catfish back in 1970. After reading media coverage about the channel catfish state record, E.J. Bowden of Rocky Mount . . . informed the NCWRC he had caught a bigger channel catfish weighing 23 pounds, 4 ounces from City Lake in Rocky Mount in 1970, and he had the paperwork and photo to prove it . . . . [Now,] the [state Wildlife and Resources] Commission [has] accepted Bowden’s channel cat as the official state record. |
