| Remember this? Click the photo for a larger view This postcard that was postmarked 1947. The bridge in the foreground is the now closed US 301 bridge over Lake Marion and the one in the background was torn down after the picture was taken. The pilings for the spans of the old old bridge are still sticking out of Lake Marion. I think that the old old bridge predates Lake Marion since there are three remaining pieces of it (one of which has a billboard on it) Those pieces each say 1927 on the end of them. I have never been able to verify that but I think that before Lake Marion there were three small spans of concrete bridge and they were part of a causeway through the swamp that led up to the spans of the old old bridge which actually was what crossed the pre Lake Marion Santee River. After the flooding they must have ripped out the causeway and left the three concrete spans sitting high and dry in the lake like they are now. Anyway that's what I think.
